The Special Events Committee (SEC) of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday last honoured two outstanding members of the Berbice Under-15 team which recently won the Inter County tournament.
Shawn Pereira, Captain of the team received a bicycle valued at $16, 000 after being named the County’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while Gudakesh Motie Kanhai received a New GPC hamper for his outstanding performance in the crucial final round fixture against former champs Demerara who were dethroned.
SEC Chairman Hilbert Foster in remarks said that the Berbice Board has a policy that every time the County wins a tournament, an MVP would be named and will receive a bicycle. Foster noted that the incentive was a motivation for the players to strive for excellence while disclosing that the selection of the MVP was done solely by the team’s management and was not only based on performances on the cricket field but also on discipline, attitude, hygiene, commitment and the ability to inspire teammates.
The BCB he said strongly believes that personal character was an important and natural talent and he challenged all young Berbician cricketers to develop ‘the theme of discipline and commitment.’
Under-15 coach Julian Moore, who at 24 years of age was one of the youngest coaches to lead a Berbice team at the Inter County level, praised the Board for its investment in youth and for working hard to lift the standard of the game.
Moore disclosed that the Under-15 team was successful as a result of team unity, discipline, appropriate planning and a strong desire to win. The delighted coach stated that Pereira was selected as the MVP because of his outstanding performances as Captain, his inspiration to fellow players and his performances as a batsman, bowler and fielder.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry and President Keith Foster both complimented the achievements of Motie Kanhai and Pereira and challenged them to work harder to achieve more.
Mr. Faizal Jaffarally of National Communications Network (NCN), who sponsored the Berbice Under-15 competition, offered congratulations to the team and stated that NCN was delighted to assist in the preparation of the team.
The NCN sponsored Inter Zone tournament was used by the BCB Junior Selectors to select the team.
Gratitude was also expressed to Tenelec Inc. of Washington DC, USA for their sponsorship of Under-15 cricket in the Ancient County.
