He describes himself as the ‘Old Dog’ in the sport, having been involved for over 20 years, but his love is still as strong as when he started so much so that he has even gotten his son and nephew to join him as well.
His name is Kamal Seebarran and he competes in the Group 3 category driving a Mazda RX7 and is the joint defending champion along with Ryan Rahaman, but according to him, come Sunday when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club stages its opening Meet at the South Dakota Circuit, he is in no mood to share championship honours this time so he has thrown out a challenge to all pretenders to his throne.
Seebarran in conversation with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, said that he has full respect for his rivals, but his intention as always is to win races and that would be his top priority on Sunday.
The veteran driver disclosed that he will be using the Meet as part of his preparations to participate later this year at Bushy Park in Barbados.
“I will be using this event to assess my preparedness for the Barbados Meet which will be very competitive as well,” Seebarran indicated.
Seebarran speaking about the current state of the sport believed that the exorbitant cost of spare parts has given the competitors with major sponsorship a distinct advantage and the effects might be felt down the road.
“There are guys who’re spending huge sums of money to prepare for a Meet, while others are struggling to gain significant sponsorship that could make the sport more competitive and level the playing field,” Seebarran declared.
He called for more equity among the limited amount of sponsors that are available that would almost guarantee keener rivalry among competitors. Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the younger Seebarrans, Kamal said that they are both eager to get back on the track and resume their battle.
“The two of them (Shane and Clint) are cousins, best friends and when on the track intense rivals so fans could expect some daredevil driving as they fight for supremacy. Presently, Shane is the defending Rookie champion with Clint gaining the runner-up spot last year, but according to Kamal, the latter has vowed to reverse that result come Sunday.
They both drive Toyota Starlets, they’re both 18 years old so it will come down to who wants the title more. All three are sponsored by 4R Bearings, Space La Noba and Ray’s Auto Sales.
