Deputy Mayor of Georgetown Robert Williams has agreed to have his name used for a tapeball cricket competition set to commence at two venues in Lodge Georgetown on May 1.
Williams, an ardent cricket fan, is the new Manager of the East Ruimveldt-based Ace Warriors Cricket team which participates in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) 2nd division competitions and members of that club have collaborated to stage to tapeball event.
According to a club member, matches will be played at the Diplomats ground on Hadfield Street while a letter requesting the use of the Cultural Centre tarmac has been dispatched to that entity.
Registration fee is $6,000 and closes on April 18. Any team in Guyana is free to be a part of the competition and those desirous of participating are asked to call Cleyon on telephone number 613-3347 for more information.
Williams, who is also involved in Domino at a national level, informed that sport is an important aspect of youth development and can play a major role in getting young people away from the negative distractions in society.
He also revealed that the Ace Warriors club recently received a quantity of cricket gear from the Food for the Poor organization for their participation in GCA competitions. (Sean Devers)
