Chanderpaul 49, Lord 4-24 star as Demerara hammer Essequibo by 114 runs
Demerara defeated Essequibo by 114 runs in the second match of the Castrol Under-15 50 overs Inter County cricket competition yesterday at Anna Regina Community Center Ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Demerara who won the toss, elected to bat first and posted a respectable 194-7 off their allotted overs.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul top scored with 49 (1×4), Terrence Alstrom baked up well with 38 (3×4, 1×6) and Brian Sattar 31 (4×4, 1×6).
Left arm spinner Harry Green took 2-18 off 10 overs while pacer Hassan Mohamed who took 3-25 in the first game was again among the wickets with 2-47 from 10 overs. Raj Parbattie and Ricardo Adams also took one wicket each for the home team.
Essequibo in reply were dismissed for 80 in 37.1 overs. Mark Gonsalves was their leading run getter with 25 (4×4) while Shivindra Hemraj made 19 (1×4). Left arm spinner Devon Lord grabbed 4-24 off 10 overs and Vishal Narayan 3-5 from 9 overs for the winners.
Essequibo will now take on Berbice at the same venue tomorrow and Saturday while Demerara and Berbice will clash in the final round matches on the 15th and 16th at a venue to be announced.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport after the game coach of the Essequibo team Forbes Daniels said he is disappointed with his team’s performance. Daniels said that his boys are not playing as a team and more training camps should be arranged in the County for the youngsters.
He stated that Essequibo is not short of talent but financial assistance is needed to develop players. He also informed that his players should be more careful in their running between the wickets and that is one area he will look at since several of his batters were dismissed via the run out route.
Meanwhile, Demerara coach Gavin Need stated that he is pleased with his charges performance, highlighting that they played as a unit. (Zaheer Mohamed)
