Sixty-one year old Selena Emelda Fredricks of 12 Field, Barnwell North, Mocha Backdam, a grandmother of 38 and mother of 10 drowned after falling from a bridge she was crossing around 15:00 hours on Saturday.
According to her daughter, Joylyne Smith, Fredricks had consumed some alcoholic beverages and was brought home by her son and placed in bed to rest.
However, she later got up and ventured in search of her son.
It was while she was at 13 Field, Barnwell North, while crossing the bridge she fell into the canal where she drowned.
She added that her mother is a well known and loving person in the area and is a farmer who sells her produce.
According to another resident, the grandmother was a little intoxicated and fell into the canal and someone saw and ran to deliver the news of what had happened to her relatives.
It is believed that if the boy who saw Fredricks fall into the canal had not panicked, he could have assisted in rescuing the woman.
Her daughter is asking for her children who are stationed in the interior to visit her home as they may not be aware of their mother’s death.
