Cyclists are in for a bumper weekend of competition and attractive prizes beginning tomorrow from 9:00am with the 4th George ‘Boy Blue’ Cumberbatch Memorial 11-race meet at the inner circuit of the National Park.
Tomorrow’s activity, sponsored by George Humphrey of Humphrey’s Bakery & Farm Products and Clifford Johnson, a former President of the Guyana Cycling Federation, both, former confidants of the Late George Cumberbatch, will bring out all the local based athletes who will also be in action on Sunday at the inaugural Cell Smart / Digicel sponsored HIV/AIDS Awareness 20-lap race set for the outer circuit of the National Park.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, President of organizing club Roraima Bikers, Brian Allen said he is expecting a very competitive day of action in the 11 races they have planned.
“As is the norm, we are catering for all categories of riders from the young to the old and we guarantee that they will all have a good time. The cash prizes that our sponsors have put together are also attractive.
This annual race is held to celebrate the memory Cumberbatch who was a former Vice President of Roraima Bikers Club and Executive Committee member of the Guyana Cycling Federation. Regarded as the most ‘prolific sprinter’ ever in Guyana, Cumberbatch rode with the likes of Bunny Elphage, Bill Figueira, O.P. Bennett, Maurice Robello, Pat and Billy Holder, Maxie Pereira as well as the English duo of Thompson and Carl Barton and Roger Gibbons and Hilton `Barracuda’ Mitchell of Trinidad.
The cream of the current crop (juniors, seniors & veterans) will have the chance to turn in exceptional performances when they face off tomorrow which will be the second cycling event at this facility for the year.
BMX races will set the tone for the day with the 7-11 age group competitors competing over 2-laps; 12-14 3-laps while the open BMX race will also be a 3-lap contest.
The Mountain bike/upright event over 10-laps is expected to be keenly contested with 4-sprint prizes at stake.
Veterans under and over 50 will battle in respective 6-lap events while the category 1&2 and 3&4 events will go for a distance of 10-laps as will the junior/juvenile race.
There is likely to be another mountain bike race for competitors over 35 years for a total of 5-laps while the main event will be the open clash for a total of 30 laps with 10-prime prizes up for grabs.
Last year’s winner was junior rider Christopher Holder. An enthralling and exciting feature event is in the making as riders will be seeking to get much needed leg work in as they prepare for Sunday’s mega 20-lap clash around the outer circuit of the Park.
