Dear Editor,
It was so refreshing to read one country in the region taking the opportunity to celebrate our heroes. And I agree with Dr Van West Charles that more must be done to sensitize the growing population of youths about the contribution these men and women made.
Just recently in a meeting with student leaders of the University of Guyana (UG) a question was ask if when these leaders died if their history was buried with them. Why? Because they as young people coming up, they were just hearing tit bits about these heroes. And this was in the letter pages of the two dailies.
What I think is required is:-
(1) a concerted effort to be made by all stakeholders, and by that I mean the Government, the PNCR, UG and all who have information, to set up or establish a place or building where information is placed so that people can go and read, do research and get accurate information concerning the contributions made by our heroes
(2) review our calendar of holidays. See which holidays should be gotten rid of and have a day set aside. Could be called ‘Heroes Day’, (just a suggestion others might have different names. But it must encapsulate what it is we are celebrating)
I think an effort should be made to Honour our heroes in a way that transcend race or politics.
In the United States of America they honour George Washington, their first President; they have Martin Luther King Day. And I want to end with that song that the Trade Winds sang, “Where Are Your Heroes Caribbean”.
