Guyana claim 1st innings points from CCC despite fifties from Corbin & Reifer

Discarded Wes Indies Captain Floyd Reifer (57) hit his 2nd consecutive fifty in this year’s Regional 4-day cricket tournament yesterday and featured in century partnership with Kyle Corbin (74) for CCC against Guyana on the 2nd day of their 4th round encounter at the 3Ws Oval in Barbados.
Reifer struck 10 fours from 133 minutes and 99 balls in his 39th First-Class fifty while Corbin hit 9 fours from 154 balls and 233 minutes as they added 107 for the 5th wicket as CCC, chasing Guyana’s 271, recovered from 28-4 to be all out 38 minutes after Tea for 239. A 51-run 8th wicket stand between spinner Kavesh Kantasingh (32) and Kevin McLean (16*) helped to reduce the South American’s lead to just 32.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul finished 3-75 from 28 overs while the new ball pair of Brandon Bess (3-38) and Esuan Crandon (2-47) were also among the wickets for Guyana who reached 60-1 from 20 overs in their 2nd innings by the close.
Skipper Sewnarine Chattergoon is unbeaten on 28 and Chris Barnwell is not out on 23 with their team enjoying a lead of 92 going into the 3rd day today.
Chattergoon got going in the Guyana 2nd innings with a flowing on-driven boundary off McLean. The 28-year-old Chattergoon, who averages 33.45 and has 5 tons at this level from 65 matches, stroked McLean for 3 more delightful boundaries and his timing increased as his innings progressed.
Chandrika in his 3rd match at this level, laboured for 34 balls for his 6 before he played no shot to Ryan Austin and was leg before in the off-spinner’s first over to leave the score on 35-1.
Chattergoon, with 4 Tests to his name, was joined by Barnwell who batted positively and steered Catlin for consecutive fours before clipping Austin for another behind square and thumping Kantasingh down the ground for four as the Guyana 50 was posted in 15.3 overs.
Earlier, CCC resumed on 24-3 replying to Guyana’s 271 and although Kjorn Ottley caressed Permaul to the cover boundary he was soon taken at short leg by Vishaul Singh off Permaul for 9 as CCC slumped to 28-4.
Reifer got going with a square drive off Permaul for four and after being beaten by 4 consecutive big-turning leg breaks from Davindra Bishoo, overnight batsman Corbin freed himself with a pugnacious back foot punch to the cover boundary as Bishoo, who continues to lack patience as a spinner, bowled short.
The experienced 37-year-old Reifer, who has 13 First Class tons, launched into Bishoo with an array of savage pulls as the Albion leg-spinner produced a succession of long hops and Chattergoon was forced to replace him with the lively Bess after he had bowled just 3 overs yesterday.

On a still good pitch for batting and fast outfield, another small crowd watched as Reifer, who averages just 9.25 from his 6 Tests, and Corbin staged a recovery in hot conditions.
Reifer smashed powerfully to the square cover boundary as Crandon bowled short and the fast but still at times the wayward West Berbice pacer responded with a quick bouncer that cannoned into the former West Indies Captain’s shoulder.
A scorching square cut rocketed into the backward point boundary like a bullet and also took Vishaul Singh’s hand with it as he failed to make the save at deep gully as Bess insisted on bowling short and wide on an easy paced track.
CCC reached 50 in 21.4 overs as Permaul kept things tight from the Southern end and the runs leaked from the other end. The left-handed Reifer, who averages 34.08 from 128 First Class matches played an array of scintillating shots and his cover driving off the front foot was a joy to behold as he reached his fifty from 83 balls with 9 fours.
The 19-year-old Corbin looked uncomfortable when Bishoo pitched on or around off-stump; spinning away, but the leg-spinner tried too many things and sacrificed his control. Corbin got to his 3rd half century at this level from 102 balls with 6 fours as the partnership reached 93 by lunch. At the interval, CCC were 121-4 with Reifer looking ominous on 51 and Corbin on 50 and their team 151 runs away from first innings points.
Guyana struck an important blow early in the 2nd session when Reifer was trapped leg before to Esuan Crandon for 57 as the 108-run partnership which began at 10:10hrs yesterday morning, was finally broken to leave CCC on 135-5.
Test Keeper Jamaican Chadwick Walton joined the Barbadian Corbin who was leg before, pushing forward to Bishoo at 162-6.
Chadwick Walton launched into Bishoo and smashed him for consecutive fours off the back foot over long-on before Bess held a good running catch on the long-on boundary to give Permaul his 3rd wicket and leave the students on 179-7. Walton’s cameo 25 included 4 fours and lasted 31 balls.
Bishoo, who bowled poorly yesterday, was hit for two fours by Kantasingh as the home team passed the 200 mark against a bowling attack which again looked ordinary.
The Guyanese, who strangely used Barnwell for just a solitary over late on Friday afternoon, struggled to separate the CCC 8th wicket pair who increased their partnership to 33 by tea with Kantasingh on 19, Mclean 14 and the home team 212-7.
After tea, the tactics of the Ravindra Seeram coached side was very unimaginative and they continued to use the inconsistent Bishoo and the innocuous part-time off-spin of Royston Crandon in tandem. Bess was eventually summoned for another spell with CCC on 223-7 and the 8th wicket stand worth 44 runs while Barnwell was given the ball for the first time yesterday. Kantasingh edged Barnwell to 3rd man for four to post the half-century partnership before he was run out to end the 51-run stand. His 34 came from 65 balls and 73 minutes with 3 fours and his demise left the score on 230-8.  Jason Bennett smashed Bess over long-off for four and pulled him for two next ball before the pacer had the last laugh by trapping Bennett (9) leg before and bowling Kismar Catlin for a duck to give Guyana first innings points.
Play on the penultimate day today is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs and Guyana will be pressing for an outright win to keep their hopes of still challenging for the title alive.
