Dear Editor,
East Indians will keep migrating unless they make the psychic break with the PPP I am replying to a letter by the Indian Arrival Committee captioned, “IAC views Kissoon’s opinions as misinformed”, Kaieteur News, January 28.
This correspondence of the IAC was in response to my warning to the East Indian people of Lusignan about the PPP using the massacre for political purposes (My Kaieteur News column, “An appeal to the East Indians of Lusignan,” January 27). My point was two-fold – the IAC is a front for the PPP and secondly, through that front, the PPP will manipulate the occasion to seek subtle (sometimes not subtle) political support
Before I reach my rebuttal proper, let me reiterate in emphatic terms – the IAC is a PPP front group. This is the culture of the PPP. All Guyana knows it. The people of Lusignan know it. The folks at Lusignan went to experience a cultural evening but the PPP of course would like Guyanese to believe that the villagers turned out to hear Robert Persaud and company.
Now for my argument proper: The IAC is up to mischief when the signatory to the letter, Ms. Priya Mahase defined my column as being contemptuous of the people of Lusignan. I am not contemptuous of East Indians in Guyana. I am deeply disappointed that for four consecutive elections they put the PPP in power and yet they humiliate themselves by flocking to the US, Canadian and UK diplomatic missions to get visas and when they do remain as illegals in the people’s countries.
In Barbados, East Indian masons, joiners and carpenters have reduced themselves to indentured servants. The East Indians of Guyana who read my articles should know that I am not a New York-based blogger.
I lived the entire 17 years of PPP rule since 1992. I see how East Indians behave in terms of wanting to leave Guyana.
Their permanent psychological prison will disappear the day they make the psychic break with the PPP. I would suppose that in countless East Indian villages, you can find students that I have taught. I will gladly visit any Indian enclave in Guyana to explain my writings, my condemnations of the PPP and to answer every conceivable question put to me
If the people of Lusignan are reading this letter, then I request they invite me to describe for them the evolution of the IAC, how it gets its money etc. I will tell them about the Lusignan massacre and contextualize it for them bringing out many frightening dimensions of the crime madness that began in 2002 and the PPP’s sordid role in the tit for tat. I will attempt answer inquiries on why the massacre took place, why “Sash Sawh was killed and who murdered Ronald Waddell. I will place the role of Roger Khan in the perspective that it should be placed. I ask all East Indian in this land to demand answers from the PPP leadership about several disturbing trends in the long domination of the PPP
Indians have to be truthful to themselves. Here is one pressing curiosity that all Indians that voted for the PPP need to investigate. Each time his child is about to be born, this PPP Minister flies his wife over to the US to make sure the kid is a registered US citizen. In Jamaica, that man would have been devastated by the media and the Opposition and dumped by his party. I could name one of Guyana’s best medical doctors that remigrated yet registered his daughter’s birth as a Guyanese when the child was born overseas. He could easily have taken his wife to the US. I know a prominent female attorney who told me as her pregnancy was nearing that she wanted her child to be a Guyanese
It is for PPP voters to confront this man and demand an explanation as to why he wants to be part of shaping Guyana’s future but his children cannot be Guyanese. In closing let me put a question to the villagers of Lusignan.
Why for the past two years are ruling politicians selected by the IAC to address them. Why not a UG historian? Why not the chairman of the Guyana Council of Churches? Why not one of our illustrious scholars, like Rupert Roopnarine or Clive Thomas? But why ruling politicians.
The answer lies in evil. The PPP is insensitive to the suffering of the victims’ relatives and families. It hosts the event each year to seek its political fortunes. I close with an appeal to every East Indian voter. Look at your children as you go to vote and ask yourself if they do not deserve a future. I didn’t say a better future. Simply a future. Because we don’t see one on the horizon. In the meantime I await your invitation to me
