Dear Editor,
Yet again one of the premier institutions in Guyana cries out for help. What it is this time – ‘Future Leaders’ left at the mercy of the general public for donations in order to fulfil their dreams and goals of competing in the 2010 Barbados Relay Fair.
The questions many may ask are why this is so, and who can be so insensitive to deny the students of outstanding performance the opportunities to develop and attain rounded personalities.
For too long, the cries have been by the educators that our students – the nation’s children must possess the qualities that will make them marketable in the Global Economy. But to what avail.
Perhaps the Head of Queen’s College quite often forgets those who are responsible for making the College what it is. More so, it is the very Head, who would stand on the stage of sanctity during general and special assemblies to plea with us (the students) to work hard and maintain the standards of this prestigious institution.
However, it is beyond the student population as to the frequent demands requested by the Head of the College and the students always deliver – the last four years top CSEC performers and best Science student, two years in a row best Business Student and one year Best Agricultural Science student (all these awards in the last four years).
In addition, over $300,000 was raised for the Haiti Relief Fund and donated to the Guyana Red Cross, and finally, over $500,000 every year for the Annual Market Day Activities.
Nonetheless, who is brave and bold enough to inform us what else we are expected to perform in order to be given the due investment that we so desire.
It is that the students of Queen’s College are only recognised for, as cheerful givers and not cheerful receivers, or better yet, are we only created to work hard to keep the standards of this prestigious institution. If so, then the motto of the College Faithful and Useful Always would certainly mean nothing to us.
It is therefore, our plea that the sum of $2.5 million required by the Queen’s College Barbados Relay Team be made available, to ensure that the athletes are afforded the opportunity to compete in the 2010 Fair.
A special call is made to those persons in authority to come to the fore-front and make this dream a reality. For failure to do so would certainly indicate that the younger generation has no hope for a bright and promising future.
