Two new faces were added to the executive of the Guyana Hockey Board which recently held its Annual General Meeting at the GCC Pavilion.
The two new members of the current executive are Brian Asregado and Gayle Harding, while most officials’ from the past executive were re-elected to their previous posts.
The new executive is: Phillip Fernandes- President, Rawl Davson and Ivor Thompson- Vice-Presidents, Elton G. Sills- Honorary Secretary, Assistant Secretary / Treasurer, Devin Hooper- Treasurer and Committee members Brian Asregado and Gayle Harding.
Meanwhile, Fernandes released a summary from his President’s report which is as follows:
He said that clubs made great efforts to raise funds to travel overseas to compete in tournaments where they have performed well.
“Despite incredible odds we are maintaining our competitiveness in the region and our clubs and players need to be greatly complimented. The need, however, for an artificial surface is still largely evident as the training conditions, especially for our national teams, leave much to be desired. We will continue to make efforts at the Ministerial level to try to secure an area where hockey is the priority and which hopefully can then house an artificial pitch.
Our women’s hockey remains in dire need of expansion and I strongly urge clubs that do not have a women’s team to make every effort to develop one as a ladies league cannot be held with only two clubs. This situation has caused us to include ladies teams in the second division which is not ideal and is hopefully only a temporary measure.”
Coaching-
Coaching in the schools was probably the most successful activity for the year and is the only way to ensure the continuity of hockey in Guyana. I hope that we can hold our first inter-school competition this year which would be the first in a very long time.
Tours-
“This year there are a number of opportunities for international competition as the CAC Games are being held in July in Puerto Rico, the Pan American Indoor Cup is being held in Venezuela in August and Guyana has also been invited to an indoor tournament to be held in Canada this coming May. These tournaments are open to male and female national teams. The Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival was once again successful, but there are already new ideas for improvement this year, while improvement to the floor of the Sports Hall remains critical to attract teams from Europe.
