Dear Editor,
We have now completed the year 2009. We must now reflect at what we have achieved over the past year. We must put our past failures in life behind and do not use our past to destroy our future but use our past to build upon a better future.
We have seen the passing of lots of prominent people in Government; we have seen crimes and killings and robberies on the increase; a great breakdown of morality in our homes, our society and our country.
We must ask ourselves some serious questions about life itself. Questions such as: Who am I? What is my purpose in this world? What can I do to contribute to society? What is my destiny after I am gone from this life?
Though poetry written by many literary greats like Tagore, Gibran, Dante, Homer and Shakespeare etc. may offer some hope about life. Our true hope about life is a philosophy we ought to take seriously from a theological and spiritual viewpoint. Jesus said:
‘’What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and lose his own soul; and what shall a man give in exchange for his soul’’
These words spoken by Jesus will cause the material minded man to introspect very deeply about life and its divine meaning.
Jesus is really admonishing us that life itself is more than material gains. He is also telling us that if we value material things in this life more than the things of God we will eventually die and go to a lost eternity.
We are all travellers in this world’s destiny but we need to understand our assignment and purpose in this life. We have just celebrated Christmas in a variety of ways. In my observation most are concerned about their house decorations, eating great food, drinking and partying, but they missed the eternal essence about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. What we need to decorate is our souls by prayers and devotion to God. We must think more and more about the ultimate journey of our souls after death.
As we prepare to enter into the New Year, let’s not just go to church for a next passing moment or just to listen a next passing sermon; let’s go to church with a pure heart to serve God and to live a life pleasing to him.
So when we stand before God on the day of judgement he will be pleased with the life we lived here on earth. Let’s live a life of hope with a vision not only for our own lives but with a desire to change others and our community as well as our Nation. As our own National Poet Martin Carter wrote:
‘’I do not sleep to dream but dream to change the world/Death must not find us thinking that we die.’’
Here the esteemed poet Carter sees life from a material and spiritual stand point. His dream is to see a changed world from that full of hate, violence, and political tyranny. He sees into the world of spirit when he said:’’ death must not find us thinking that we die.’’
Guyana needs more than wage increase, what we need is a spiritual awakening of the soul by prayers and meditation. We need to see the re-introduction of religious education into our entire education system from nursery to university.
Parents ought to live a more morally upright life and be a better example to their children and the community. We need to work on some more serious marriage laws to eradicate the ‘’live home’’ life style that has taken over 70% of our population. When parents live an immoral life style children can easily go astray. We must value and honour our marriage vows if we are going to become better citizens of this nation.
As we enter into the new year let’s join with each other to build a better Nation, let’s join to eradicate crime and illiteracy, let’s join and pray for our political leaders, let our political leaders pray and ask God for divine guidance for them to rule this nation justly and let’s not break the laws of the land by bribery and corruption. May God bless and guide us as we build a Guyana devoid of hate as One People, One Nation, One Destiny. A blessed 2010 to all Guyanese.
Rev. Gideon Cecil
