Dear Editor,
Recently a sex percent increase was announced for Public Servants. I hope the Government pensioners are not forgotten this time.
There were two increases last year, the first paid in May, retroactive to January and the second paid in December, retroactive to May.
Pensioners are not in receipt of the latter increase and answers to queries at the Ministry of Finance were that, “no instructions came from upstairs.” Last year National Insurance Scheme (NIS) awarded a five percent increase for pensioners but this was just for the Minimum Level which moved from $13,335 to $14,207. If this trend continues, then a pensioner who received about $18,000 due to his level of contributions will soon be relegated to the minimum level. Lastly pensioners are subjected to the same hardship like everyone; same rate for light bills; VAT; same prices at the markets and every aspect of living.
The so called reduction on water rates for pensioners is minimal and due to the fatigue/ red tape in order to qualify, very few venture on that course. Old people cannot endure this fatigue.
I hope that the elderly in our society are granted an increase in pensions this time. Pensioner
