After clubs question delay
Several city clubs, who came out on top in the just concluded Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League tournament, have been querying about the non-payment of their prize money to date. However, GFF President Colin Klass assured that the money will be paid before the Christmas holidays.
After being made aware of the situation, Kaieteur Sport contacted the GFF boss and he gave all assurances that the prize money was secure and will be handed over just before the festive season.
Several representatives of the clubs had called officials of the GFF questioning when they will receive their prizes and promises were made to disburse the money this past week. However, that was not forthcoming. A lack of communication by the GFF to the clubs involved on when the issue would be dealt with also cast a pall over the scene.
Questioned on the delay, Klass informed that they had planned a Gala presentation ceremony on January 29 where representatives from FIFA and other key players would be present. He noted that it was always their intention to hand out the money before and also hold this special function after.
He explained that this league was a pilot project and commended those who worked tirelessly on the administrative end to make the event a success. Klass admitted that there were a few minor bumps but assured that they are reviewing the entire process and will get it right the next time.
One of those bumps mentioned is the slight delay in the payment of the prizes and future tournaments will see that aspect being dealt with in a more timely fashion.
Klass mentioned the visit by football icon king Pele and the upcoming international women’s tournament as a few things they (GFF) have on the front burners, but assured that there was no intention to in anyway deny the clubs of their hard earned rewards.
Alpha won the tournament beating the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the final, while Camptown defeated Milerock in the third place playoff.
Those teams are guaranteed prize money: $1M, $500,000, $300,000 and $200,000 respectively.
