‘Anger is one letter short danger’

The lives of 56 employees, their families, dependents and friends were shattered when dismissal letters were given to them by the management of BCGI- RUSAL Bauxite Company.
If this simple quote “anger is one letter short danger” was adhere to by the parties involved, we would not have seen the “D”. Which in this case represent disruption of work and lives and dismissal to the employees involved in the (illegal) demonstration.
The origin of this entire situation is with the workers demanding more money for their labour, which the management said they cannot afford.
The workers became ‘anger’ with their employers and they disrupted the work. The workers action ‘anger’ management and they disciplined the workers. The anger kept on escalating to the point where employees are now dismissed and the company is now talking about discontinuing operations.
To resolve this whole situation, I would recommend that the following that should appease all stakeholders, primarily the workers.
There should be a meeting involving management, union and Government (who is also a shareholder). Persons to attend must be, three union representatives, three management representatives, Minister of Labour, Minister of Mining (Prime Minister) Commissioner of Income Tax and the President.
*The meeting should begin by washing away all bad blood that is present and the union and management apologising for allowing the situation to escalate to this level.
*The management withdrawing all letters (suspension and dismissal) and start talks afresh.
*Management and union agreeing on a package to be paid to employees, including a yearly safety bonus and no employee must be sent home.
*Suspend all talks on wage increase until 2010 for 2011
*Since the company is in financial trouble and cannot increase wages, the government should approve a waiver on income tax to employees for one year i.e. allow employees to pay tax only on basic hours (40). This will allow employees to take home a little more.
*Work out a reasonable package for all employees to enjoy a peaceful festive season.
A visit to the bauxite community is one full of despair and the recommendation given above if accepted will surely give everyone something to smile about.
