Dear Editor,
As leaders around the world prepare to meet in Copenhagen, Denmark next month, there is no doubt that climate change can have a severe effect on small countries like Guyana.
Our economy is weak and vulnerable, and the effects of climate change can have a crippling impact.
However, President Jagdeo must be commended for his sterling efforts with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), which is expected to receive much international attention
Recently the Alliance for Change (AFC) was criticised for supporting the LCDS, but critics must realise that political maturity is needed when the need arises, and the AFC must be commended for their support on this important issue.
Guyana can ill afford to be left reeling behind, some may argue that we are poor and may be overlook by the industrial giants, but it must be told Guyana has much to be thankful for despite our problems God has blessed us with an abundance of rich rainforest, natural resources, fertile lands for agriculture, fresh water and we are posed to help in the fight to combat global warming.
Recent reports have indicated that human activities have led to large increases in heat trapping gases over the past century, global average temperature and sea level have increased, and precipitation patterns have changed.
There are countless events of weather, sea and land changes, we in Guyana must never ever forget that we are below sea level and if the seas were to rise above the usual level, our coastal land can be a disaster area.
That is why every Guyanese must play their part in these global efforts.
It is not a political issue, and must not be hijacked for such purposes.
I hate to see some using it for their own selfish games.
Some may argue that our politicians are responsible, because of their representation and participation at the highest level, but in the final analysis every citizen of the planet has contributed in some way or the other – take for example in our own Guyana we have had people polluting our drains, canals and walkways etc.
The world is at a critical stage, economic recession, hunger, disease, war, poverty, and now global warming, what more to come?
Let us pray and seek God’s face; we are living in serious times.
