Kaieteur Sports understand that the forensic audit that was conducted on the results of the National Schools’ Championships over the past few days has revealed that the defending champions, Upper Demerara won hands down.
North Georgetown protested the final outcome of the 2009 Championships that was held at the Albion Community Centre Ground after Upper Demerara was announced as overall winners when the curtains came down Friday night.
The protest was launched on Saturday and the requisite $5,000 protest fee was paid and an audit of the result ensued.
However, after several days of incisive probing, officials found no fault indictable enough to cause any changes.
Upper Demerara had finished with a total of 67 points as compared to North Georgetown, who had 63 points; Bartica took third place overall with 56 points after completing all the disciplines that were mandatory for the Championship.
The disciplines included Swimming, Track and Field, Cycling and the Teachers’ contests over four days of competition. North Georgetown was of the belief that the results should be 66 points in their favour and 65 for Upper Demerara.
North Georgetown’s Zone Secretary, Marlon Laing had told this newspaper following the announcement of the results Friday night that the computerised results showed that North won the competition with the latter score above.
He had indicated that the major discrepancy came in the Teachers’ competition where his District is believed to have beaten Upper Demerara, which should have given them points that Upper Demerara received consequentially.
But the results of the audit that was revealed yesterday did not prove Laing’s argument to be accurate since no major discrepancy in the results was found. There were some minor mistakes but nothing to discredit Upper Demerara. (Edison Jefford)
