Dear Editor,
I was reading the Kaieteur News (2009-11-17) and was taken aback by Freddie Kissoon’s column titled, “Eyes Wide Open: What does Mr. Jagdeo see on his frequent foreign trips?”
I found it very distasteful that he sought to use the death of two young girls by way of suicide in another one of his anti-government rants.
In his critique of the University of Guyana (UG), Freddie went on and on about the failure of the administration to provide proper resources and facilities, yet as an example he could only have pointed to an instance where he was unable to obtain a telephone line.
What he also failed to mention is that UG has lots of overseas students studying from different parts of world. If UG is in such a deplorable state why would so many people leave their country of origin to finish their education there?
Kissoon as a former student of, and current lecturer at UG, should tell us what he has done to improve the standards. As certainly a lecturer of 23 years without an academic publication will not augur well for standards there.
In almost every learning institution the world over, there is good and bad, however, we must not accept downright lies and misinformation. Marcelle Joseph
