Annual event bounces off at CASH
The Second Annual Kevin Worrell Memorial Basketball Championships will bounce off today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) where Nets Basketball Club is expected to launch a title defence after winning on Burnham Court.
Each Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) sanctioned club is allowed to enter one First Division and one Third Division team this year as opposed to the ‘Open’ format that was used last year when Nets won.
The National Sports Commission has granted the GABA access to the CASH for the one-day tournament where the winning teams are expected to receive trophies and cash incentives in a winner-take-all seven-a-side contest.
The GABA Secretary, who is also Head Coach of the Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club and National Coach, Robert Cadogan had said that the usage of the Sports Hall will give the tournament the credibility it needs in its infancy.
Kevin Worrel, a former Courts Pacesetters player, collapsed suddenly on Burnham Court on October 5 last year and was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital later that same day. The mysterious death was widely publicised.
Worrel was 21 years old at the time of his demise and was participating in a GABA Basketball Retreat to launch the 2008/09 Season. President Trevor Rose had subsequently stated that a tournament will be held annually in his honour.
