The flight problem of the Brazilians seemed to have been resolved with an announcement that two athletes from Guyana’s South American neighbour are scheduled to arrive in the country this morning for the annual 10km Road Race.
The Guyana Olympic Association Headquarters confirmed yesterday afternoon that a two member team that includes male athlete Eliesio Da’Silva and female athletic counter-part, Sueli Vieira are expected in Guyana this morning.
The Brazilian distance athletes, who are a regular feature at the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) South American 10km race that is slated for Sunday, had previously reported problems with flights to Guyana.
“The Brazilians are confirmed,” Secretary of the Olympic Association’s Headquarters in Kingston, Shanomae Blackmore told Kaieteur Sport yesterday. Their presence in the race has always added the justified competitive twist.
Brazilians have dominated the first stage in the International Women’s Race while a male Brazilian has only won twice in Guyana since 2002. The seventh Annual South American 10k’s second stage will be held in Suriname next weekend.
This newspaper understands that Trinidad and Tobago’s four-member team, along with a Surinamese team, are also expected in Guyana today. It is not clear when St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Pamenos Ballantyne will be here.
The local Secretariat is also yet to confirm the participation of Guyana’s top long distance athletes Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson, who train and reside in Trinidad.
