A minibus travelling along the Demerara Harbour Bridge yesterday, burst into flames during morning rush hour, stalling traffic for several hours.
An eyewitness told Kaieteur News that the fire originated from the front of the bus that was heading to the city.
The minibus driver and all passengers escaped unhurt, and made their own way off the bridge.
No one at the scene could have accurately said how the fire ignited, but the driver did tell reporters that he had recently replaced the chassis.
The vehicle was so badly burnt that the wheels melted and the headlamps shattered.
The seats of the vehicle were bent out of shape and what was left of the dashboard had crumbled to the floor of the vehicle.
According to an eyewitness, the Guyana Fire Service “made no sense.”
He told Kaieteur News reporters that the fire engine showed up on the scene with no water, and by the time the tender could get water “the flames practically out themselves.”
