One teacher now holds the responsibility of teaching approximately 138 students at the Kuru Kururu Primary School, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
During Kaieteur News’s visit to the school on Tuesday last, it was observed that the teacher, quite naturally, had a rather difficult time controlling the children, who are all in Grade Five.
This publication was told that two teachers are currently away from the school, and that is reason for the classes being merged.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the teachers is on one month leave, which she is entitled to after four years, while the other teacher is doing final exams at the Cyril Potter College of Education.
Parents informed this newspaper that the situation is one which is ‘distressing’ as they find it impossible for one teacher to teach a class of more than one hundred children.
Another teacher at the school said, “The teacher is there and she is trying her best with the children and she is not even feeling well.”
The teacher in question, declined to comment on the matter for fear of victimization.
Meanwhile, when Kaieteur News made contact with the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Genevieve Whyte-Nedd, her secretary said that the CEO would not be able to comment on the matter since she was not aware of the situation at the school.
According to the secretary, the CEO would only know of this if the headmistress of the school contacts her.
It was emphasized that this was not done, since no telephone call went through her from the headmistress of Kuru Kururu Primary.
This newspaper also understands that there are two Primary Schools in the Kuru Kururu community.
A recently constructed building houses students from Grades one to three, while an older building with some broken furniture houses students from Grades four to nine.
