Dear Editor,
Ever since the Kaieteur News has been highlighting cases of alleged corruption relating to several contracts, there have been all kinds of reactions.
Denials, accusations of sensationalism and even lawsuits have been the order of the day.
While the Kaieteur News is doing what it is supposed to do, there are some who feel that the newspaper has no right to do so without first seeking explanations and clarifications.
I believe the Kaieteur News is just laying the facts as it relates to the stated sums expended on these contracts, with accompanying photographs.
Nothing is wrong with this, the public will judge whether these figures are actually inflated or not.
But let us, for argument sake, accept that there is corruption, as is being pointed to by the highlighting of these contracts.
Is it not the President’s duty to seek answers?
After all, it was the President who has stated repeatedly ‘show me the evidence’.
But to date he has remained silent on this issue, except to berate the newspaper for their coverage of crime.
Transparency International has listed Guyana as the most corrupt country in this part of the world. I have not heard the President say one word, on the issue of corruption.
Are we to assume that the President is so afraid to deal with the issue because he knows that the Kaieteur News may be on the right track?
Why the silence Mr. President?
Michael Anthony
