Mathew Khan has temporarily resumed his table tennis (TT) training and hopes to make a full return to the sport competitively next year following his hiatus. Khan stated yesterday that he just needed a break for personal reasons.
The senior member of the Guyana’s national men’s team told Kaieteur Sport in a succinct interview that his sessions at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall are based on maintaining his fitness for a comprehensive competitive season.
“I just play to get a sweat and keep fit at the moment. I needed a rest and as soon as I feel comfortable, I will alert them (Guyana Table Tennis Association). We are not training for anything right now,” Khan directly informed.
The itinerant regional and international campaigner had missed out when Guyana toured French Guiana for the Caribbean Championships this year. He was part of the men’s unit but due to personal commitment, he did not compete.
Khan has been at the forefront of the national men’s team since 2004 when he won silver at the under-21 level at the Caribbean Championships in Trinidad and Tobago. He is also a Men’s Doubles silver medallist at the event.
However, the top player’s career has been up and down since last year and while he gave this newspaper the reason (s) for his inconsistency, Khan believed that since those are of a personal nature, they should not be published.
“No doubt I have my eyes set on returning for Guyana. I cannot give up on tennis; I love tennis.
I have to play ‘til I die, especially now that the sport is taking off here,” the athlete told this newspaper during one of his training sessions.
Khan is of the view that Guyana has an outstanding base for the sport, which is indicative of the country’s regional performances at all levels in the past.
He said that now is a good time to become a table tennis player in Guyana.
