Dear Editor,
Every time I hear or read about some sort of cold blooded psycho killing or cruel bare face robbery by rouges/criminals disguised in military/police uniform, I can’t help remembering the words of Barrington Braithwaite, who told the story of how Michael Jules aka ‘Porridge man’ was murdered.
Says Braithwaite, “the system had captured trouble, unbalanced personalities, and created soulless mass murders out of them”. How can we not believe Barrington Braithwaite when we are witnessing daily, more and more evidence of this form of psychotic behaviour?
The recent brutal robbery/murder of Dweive Kant Ramdass by the three ranks from the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard has heighten the fear in many and implanted further distrust and lack of confidence in our Joint Services, who ironically are paid by our money to protect us! This cold blooded killing demonstrates clearly that none of us -regardless of race, class or else can ever pretend to be safe, we can just as beastly be put to death at a flash by those very people who took an oath and sworn allegiance to serve and protect us.
Let us not be fooled, we are approaching a critical point, we all stand open and vulnerable, the beast has encircled us in various forms, we are living among wolves in sheep clothing. But we can’t surrender to them; they must be indentified and crushed
This is a matter of concern for all of us not just those in command, many of whom are questionable, but the common people whose lives are at stake must become involved, “all are involved all are consumed.”
It is becoming crystal clear as events unfold that ‘Fine Man’ and his gang was blamed for other crimes that were committed by institutionalised criminals. I have before questioned the method used by the amy/police in scrutinizing new recruits, that so many utter undesirables are admitted. One gets the impression that the place for ‘rotten eggs’ is the army/police; that a high premium on quality/good character is not essential. Many young men – right now, are joining the Joint Services with their own nefarious agenda in mind: just what sort of training is done to overhaul and reclaim these “trouble unbalanced personalities”, according to Braithwaite.
And because of what was alleged about those Coast Guards and their involvement in Lindo Creek I am in total agreement with Frederick Kissoon that the people of this country demand from the government that those soldiers who have been indentified be given a lie detector test; the government must concede to, only in this way would the entire population be convinced that the horrendous and savage act committed at Lindo Creek was not done by the Joint Services.
The President, Commodore Gary Best and the Home Affairs Minister should accept the invitation by Kaieteur News to view the video tape interview that was conducted on one of the Coast Guards involved in the Ramdass robbery/murder who admitted his involvement in the Lindo Creek operations. But the government it seems is so content with the killing of ‘Fine Man’ and his gang that it is afraid to openly have a free investigation into the matter, least it reveals quite to the contrary that that dastardly act was not committed by ‘Fine Man/gang. It is time we, this nation stop hearing statements like “…..are shocked, horrified and saddened at the notorious and reprehensible conduct of a few Coast Guard ranks who….On behalf of the Force/Amy…” There were numerous talks and reports about Army Coast Guards robbing boat operators/passengers frequently, yet the authorities took no heed and refused to investigate. And I heard people talked about other heinous stories which are kept in the dark.
The centre it seems can no longer hold; things are definitely falling apart. Not withstanding all the above, the bigger picture must be objectively examined. We all must admit that there is need for serious attention to be paid for the reason that are producing and fostering twisted and desperate minds – the root reason for our violent social decadence that this behaviour is now the norm, which is committed without a second thought.
And here is where we have got to agree with Audreyanna Thomas, that we need to develop social capital (SN, August 28th), “that the broader issue of poverty and poor capital is very worrying”. This is a cardinal observation that we cannot blind our eyes to, or else we will continue trimming the branches on the tree, while the tree remains firmly rooted, producing new branches. And that is the fullness thereof.
Frank Fyffe
