The word ecstatic may not be enough to describe the reaction of the candidates who are among the most outstanding performers at the 2009 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination.
The results were unveiled on Friday by the Education Ministry and positioned at the top of the preliminary list provided to media houses were Kia Persaud and Padminee Roshundatt with 14 grade ones.
Persaud, a student of Queen’s College (QC) was unavailable when this newspaper sought to have a comment from her, and according to her classmates she is on vacation overseas. However, a photograph of her was forwarded to this newspaper in hope that her excellent performance would be duly recognised.
Sixteen-year-old Padminee Roshundatt, another QC student, said that she was elated when she learnt that she is among the top candidates of the CSEC examination this year. The resident of 93 Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, said that though she is excited with the result, she is now able to breathe a sigh of relief. She attributes her success to all of her teachers, especially Navindradat Hardial (Chemistry), her parents Khrisna and Indro Roshundatt, as well as her older brother, former Capital News Reporter, Davendra Roshundatt, and her little sister Sharda who kept her company most of the nights she got up to study. Padiminee plans on continuing at QC to undertake the ‘A’ Level exams.
Roberta Ferguson
The overjoyed teen told Kaieteur News that being a part of this year’s leading performers comes as a result of years of hard work. She said that she would normally practice with past CXC papers which helped her to get a feel of what the real exams would have been like.
Roberta said that she would be pursuing a career in Accountancy and disclosed that come October she would be enrolling to begin the CAT and ACCA programmes. After that Ferguson said that she would be applying to the University of Guyana to complete a degree in Banking and Finance.
always knew that she would have done well. The 17-year-old QC student and resident of Graham Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, attained 13 grade ones.
Another QC top performer, Davendra Singh, was also able to secure for himself 12 grade ones and two grade twos. This newspaper though unable to make contact with Davendra was able to secure a photo of the standout.
Twelve grade ones and a grade two was enough to bring petite 15-year-old Jasodra Boodhoo to tears when she learnt of her achievement on Friday. The former St Rose’s High student, who hails from Lot 4 South Section, Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara, broke down when she got the good news. She had to be given some time away from her desk at her work-study stint with GT&T to digest the news.
Boodhoo said that she was extremely thankful first and foremost to God, her parents and teachers and other persons who supported her. She added that she knew that she would do well but “this is unbelievable.” According to her, she plans on furthering her education at the University of Guyana where she would like to study Business Management and Marketing as well as pursue CAT studies.
Although she left for Canada since last month and is expected to further her education there, Esha Homenauth was on hand via email on Friday to relate that she was pleased to have copped 12 grade ones. The 16-year-old Queen’s College student of Lot 10 Second Street, Bel Air Village, said that she owes her success to all of her teachers, her parents, Usha and Dr Oudho Homenauth, Director of NARI, as well as her three brothers, Ravi, Arun and Navin, who will all soon become doctors themselves. And like her father and siblings, Esha is sure that she too will be pursuing a career in medicine.
With 11 grade ones, three grade twos and one grade three, Arifa Mohammed did herself and school, Anna Regina Multilateral, proud. The 16-year-old of Aurora Village obtained 11 grade ones, three grade twos and one grade three.
When Kaieteur News visited Arifa and broke the news about her outstanding performance at her home on Friday, she was plunged into a state of disbelief but yet thrilled to learn of her success. According to the teen, she studied for at least two hours in the evenings, prior to her examinations and attended evening lessons. The aspiring Gynaecologist noted that it was crucial to study hard and be disciplined.
Sixteen-year-old Dianne Natasha Narine, another QC student secured 11 grade ones and two grade twos. She also expressed utter shock when she first learnt of her accomplishment. The 79 Seaforth and Pike Street, Kitty, resident said that she credits God for helping her as well as all of her teachers. Her parents, Susan Ramcharran and Sujit Sase Narine were also recognised for their sterling efforts.
She plans on continuing her studies at QC in order to write her ‘A’ Levels examination before contemplating another academic move.
For high achiever Tajram Dhanraj, news of having scored 11 Grade Ones and two Grade Twos, was like an advance gift for his 17th birthday, which he celebrated yesterday. From Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara, Tajram attended the Bishops’ High School, and whenever he had extra time away from the books, he would simply “talk” with his neighbours. He attends the Windsor Forest Mandir and volunteers his time to clean his place of worship. While in school, apart from studying he took part in elocution competitions and sports – he placed third in a 1,500 metre race. Tajram thanks his friends and family for helping him with his school assignments.
