Defending champions of the Clive ‘Breezer’ Nedd Memorial Masters Football Tournament Pele will be hard pressed to retain the title when the competition is played today, at the GFC ground.
The champions, who drew a bye in the opening round, will have as company the likes of Rasta Patriarchs made up of a number of former national and senior division players, Santos, the former club of the late footballer, Western Tigers, Thomas United, Carib Masters, GFC, East Bank Demerara, Top Class and a combination from the East Coast of Demerara.
Kick-off time is 09:00 hrs.
Nedd a former standout wing back, who represented Guyana and the West Indies with distinction, passed away in the United States of America on August 22, 1999.
He was born on December 26, 1948 in Leopold Street, Georgetown and migrated to the USA in the late eighties where he suddenly passed away whilst playing the game he so dearly loved.
Most people who knew him will agree that ‘Breezer’ went out while part-taking in the sport he grew to love and spent most of his life playing. During his career where he served the likes of Santos FC, North East La Penitence, Guyana and the Caribbean, he distinguished himself as one of the most accomplished and durable defenders ever to play the game which started in the late sixties and through to the mid eighties.
To many, his biggest achievement would have been in 1978 when he was selected to play for the Caribbean All Stars Selection in Trinidad and Tobago against New York Cosmos which included the Great King Pele.
His teaming up with two of his sons- Shawn and Brentnol, who also represented Guyana at the Youth level, to help Santos win the senior league Championship in Georgetown in 1985 was a feat that will be the envy of many footballers not only in Guyana, but the world at large. His name will surely have a special place in the history of the sport in Guyana.
Meanwhile, Shawn Fraser-Nedd, the son of ‘Breezer’, and family would like to thank the following who have willingly contributed to the staging of the 5th Annual Masters Football to honour the late Clive Fraser-Nedd: Gordon ‘Blacks’ Ashford, Bobby Fernandes, Maurice John, Ivor O’Brien, Kevin Walcott, Joe Harmon, Banks DIH, Guyana Beverage Inc., Prince Restaurant and Bar, Sandy’s Funeral Home and Lens Craft.
The following is the fixtures: Rasta Patriarchs versus Thomas United at 09:00 hrs; Santos vs. Western Tigers at 09:45 hrs; All Stars vs. GFC at 10:30; Carib Masters vs. East Bank at 11:15 and Top Class vs. East Coast from 12:00 hrs.
