In an act of desperation, Salim Khan on Thursday begged acting Chief Magistrate, Melissa Robertson, for a lesser punishment for his crime.
The defendant appeared before the Acting Chief Magistrate on his third charge of simple larceny.
It is alleged that Khan, on Wednesday, stole two jars of Turtle Wax from National Hardware, Water Street Georgetown, valued at a total of $4,080.
Police Prosecutor, Denise Griffith, informed the court that this was the defendant’s third appearance in the court, for the same simple larceny charge. When asked how he would like to plead to this offense, the 43-year-old decided on guilty.
Khan told the court that he was a deportee, and that he has nobody here. “I was in prison, when I come out I was hungry.”
He added that he stole the Turtle Wax to use as a means of earning money. “I went in and pick it up to go clean car, mek li’l money and get something to eat.”
Magistrate Robertson asked the accused where he lived and he responded, “I does stop in at Kitty Market.”
Both Magistrate Robertson and Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith advised the repeat offender to seek help at Food for the Poor to get himself back on his feet.
Khan was fined $30,000 with an alternative of 12 months in prison.
