The 2009 FINA World Championships continued yesterday with the Guyanese trio of Fabian, Noelle Smith and Niall Roberts competing.
Binns swam the 50m Freestyle, Smith the 50m Butterfly while Roberts took part in the 50m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly.
The highlight of the day and the entire so far for the Guyanese was Binns’ win of his heat.
Following is a detailed report from Head Coach Nicholas Fraser on the performances of the athletes in their four events on Day 6.
“Fabian was the first to compete in the 50m Freestyle. He was entered in Lane 9 of Heat 3. He had a good start (reaction time of .66) and a good swim down the centre of his lane.
He finished first in the heat with a time of 25.99. He was shown on the big screens in the Stadium and on International television for winning the heat as he turned to look at his time and shook his head in disappointment. I thought it was a pretty good time for him.”
“Niall was entered in Lane 8 of Heat 11 with an entry time of 24.90. He entered the water with a reaction time of .77. His swim was good though I felt he didn’t turn it on towards the end of the race and he finished with his arm not completely straight.
He ended with a time of 24.96. After the race he commented that he felt he could have swam faster as he felt good at the end of the race. This may be because he unconsciously was saving some energy for his 100m fly.”
“Niall only had a few minutes to himself after getting out of the race to check himself back into the call room for his second event the 100m Fly, so we met some way from the call room to do some light stretches and massages to promote recovery.
We also iced his calf to help with the recovery. He said that he felt good and we checked him into the call room.
“Niall swam in Lane 8 of Heat 4 with an entry time of 1:00.02. He had a good start (reaction time of .80) and a good breakout.
His stroke did not look as fluent in the latter half of the first length finishing the 50m with a time of 27.62 (approximately ½ a second behind what I thought he should have done) and his entry became sloppy towards the finish ending with a time of 1:00.53.”
Commenting after the race, Roberts told his coach that he was trying to be efficient in his technique in the first length and was going to try to turn it on and leave it in the pool in the second length, but he started to feel too much pain in the second length and couldn’t finish hard.
“Noelle’s event was event No. 28, the Women’s 50m Butterfly. She entered the event with a time of 34.66 and swam in Lane 8 of heat 2. She swam an excellent race, bettering her reaction time with a time of .96, but her race had a little blemish with a slightly long glide at the finish. But she bettered her entry time by more than two seconds with a time of 32.34 seconds.”
“When she exited the pool she commented that she felt she could have gone faster. Noelle is lucky because she had the most time to get accustomed to the conditions of the pool and the atmosphere here in Rome – I do expect her to do well tomorrow (today) in the 50m free. It is to be seen how she bounces back from that race to do the 50m breast.”
Today’s events for Team Guyana are, Noelle – 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke and Henk Lowe, 50m Backstroke. The Championships ends tomorrow.
