Dear Editor,
Justice is a fundamental virtue that renders to another what rightfully belongs to him. A trial with adequate evidence provided is subjected to anyone suspected of criminality. However, beating the sense out of an individual for a crime he didn’t commit or only on the whim of suspicion or hunch is downright injustice.
The theme of Guyana Defence Force is “service”. Is this service to protect and serve or brutalizing unwary ones? It seems as if they can beat a person blind without consequences.
Bharrat Jagdeo is not above the law and neither are these errant officers that believe they are!
I have read and heard of many incidents where individuals have been awfully violated of their rights by police officers and it’s time measures are taken to correct this wrongful course of action.
It’s the role of the government to enforce and protect the constitutional rights of its citizenry. Yet, countless times Guyanese are being taken advantage of without any sort of defence. Police are abusing their authority each day, and those being assaulted have no alternative but to wail and moan and pray that they live to see another day.
Our country’s motto is “One People, One Nation, One Destiny” but this hardly seems true with the unfairness being seen before us.
Most conspicuously, why only the ones low in society are taken advantage upon. Why have they chosen not to inflict beatings upon politicians, ministers and trade unionists suspected of fraud or even arson?
Those that have breached the law should be rightfully penalized by the court of law. This is the law and it should be abided by.
Moreover, police officers should come to grasp that their duty is to maintain the law and not to carry it out as they see fit…Their unlawful techniques of interrogation are unauthorised behaviour and should cease if we are to ever structure Guyana for the betterment of all Guyanese.
A. Bastian
