The preliminary inquiry into the Kaieteur News killings yesterday continued before Magistrate Nigel Hawke, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Yesterday Inspector of Police, Trevor Reid, took the witness box to give his evidence in chief about the 2006 killings.
The inspector spoke about his role in the investigation and the subsequent arrest of the defendants.
Further examination was done by Police Prosecutor Robert Tyndall. Re-examination was declined by defence counsel Compton Richardson.
The matter was subsequently adjourned and is expected to continue on Wednesday.
Last week a police corporal gave his evidence in chief about five post mortem examinations which were conducted by Chief Pathologist, Dr. Bridgemohan.
The corporal told the court that he was given a detailed report about the cause of death of each of the five pressmen.
Cross examination was done by Police Prosecutor, Robert Tyndall. Re-examination was again declined by defence lawyer, Compton Richardson. The post mortem reports were then tendered into evidence.
On trial for the murders are Dwight Da Silva, Quincy Evans, and “Nasty-man” a juvenile. Jermaine “Skinny” Charles, now deceased, had also been charged for the murders. He was killed in a confrontation with the police at Kuru Kururu last August.
After a number of adjournments over the past year, the PI recommenced earlier this month.
Edgar Stewart, Cobeer Persaud, Nadine Wegman, Rasheed Mohamed, and Ganesh Persaud have all taken the witness box.
A male Lance Corporal of Police also gave evidence into the matter. The policeman gave evidence in chief about a caution statement which he reportedly took from Dwight Da Silva. He was cross examined by Attorney at law, Compton Richardson.
The Lance Corporal also told the court about his role in the investigation into the August 8, 2006, slaying of the pressmen at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
The preliminary inquiry had been placed on hold after Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys was involved in a shooting incident.
A Police Inspector and a Corporal have all testified in the matter.
