Sweet-talking Diamond resident lands in jail
A 50-year-old man who left his home at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, to roam the Essequibo Coast, and allegedly fleece people by pretending to be in a position to obtain visas for his clients, was yesterday remanded by magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, when he made an appearance at the Charity Court.
Sohan Kanhai was charged with obtaining money by false pretence. He was unrepresented.
According to a police release, Kanhai travelled to the Coast on June 25, last, and visited Tillcack and Kushnawattie Persaud, a couple at Devonshire Castle whom he pretended to know well.
The report further stated that while as a guest of the Persaud family at Devonshire Castle for one week, Kanhai allegedly convinced his hosts that he knew their relatives in the United States.
Kanhai was also reportedly successful in convincing Kushnawattie that he was her brother-in-law whom she did not know.
The police also contended that the man convinced the Persauds to loan him $20,000 to rent a room at the Xenon Hotel for one week. They added that he got Kushnawattie to loan the alleged conman $3,000.
According to reports, the man attempted to fleece others but failed to get any money. He will make another appearance at the Anna Regina court on July 7.
