Dear Editor,
Your columnist “Peeping Tom” made some mindless observations in his column titled “Iran will resist.” I’m having a hard time digesting that the column appeared in a local newspaper and not that of an Iranian government propaganda rag.
From watching the western media, I never got the impression that they were trying to persuade anyone that the elections were rigged. Those allegations came from the Opposition leader Mr. Mousavi himself. I remember him lamenting that it was impossible for him to lose the vote in his home state and compared it to Barack Obama losing the African-Americans vote to John Mccain. From the reporting I saw, the impression I got was that the incumbent Mr. Ahmadinejad would have been the eventual winner, but not by such a wide margin and certainly not in some of the districts that were presumed to be opposition strongholds.
Concerning Aljazeera, as of Wednesday June 24 on its website, some of the headlines were: “Iran thwarts opposition protest,” “bloody scenes from Theran,” Journalists held in Iran Crackdown.” Additionally, the coverage of Iran on Aljazeera TV is similar to the coverage by the western media houses. Most are relying on videos posted on the Internet and from reports emanating from social networking sites like Twitter, and Facebook because of the government’s clear-out and silencing of foreign media coverage. Maybe the Peeper has access to some other Aljazeera TV.
Furthermore, If the events unfolding in Iran is just a western media and political invention, then why is the Iranian government going at such great lengths to silence journalists (even local journalists are prevented or intimidated from reporting what’s going on) from covering what is going on there. If there is nothing to hide allow impartial international media journalists in to share the truth with the world.
Maybe the Iranian government has already done so and has invited a select few (including the Peeper) and that’s why the Peeper’s version of events seems so divorced from what other journalist, columnists, bloggers, and Iranian citizens are reporting.
Of course the Iranian leadership will prevail and resist as the Peeper stoutly informed us, but not because of some Western conspiracy but as a result of the fear and bloodshed perpetrated on their own people.
