Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar (RHTWSB) beat Port Mourant on Saturday to take an unassailable lead in zone ‘B’ of the Tenelec Berbice first division 50-over cricket competition, while Albion also qualified for the semis as zone ‘B’ runners-up.
Police lead zone ‘A’ with 7 points with a match in hand, while West Berbice are two points behind with three games to play, as only Edinburgh and Blairmont of the seven teams in that zone cannot make it to the ‘final-four’. The final preliminary round games are scheduled for this weekend.
At Port Mourant – RHTWSB were asked to bat in a game reduced to 20 overs per side due to rain and reached 114-7, when their overs expired. Michael Hicks led the way with 38 and Esuan Crandon supported with 26.
Off-spinner Sameer Khan took 3-17 from four overs for the hosts, who fell for 94 in 19.3 overs, when they replied. Krisendat Narine hit a fighting 20 as Crandon, Andre Percival, Eon Hooper Renrick Batson and Ravi Narine took two wickets each.
At Cumberland in zone ‘B’ – Police beat Young Warriors by 13 runs, after scoring 158-4 in 20 overs and dismissing the hosts for 141 in 19.4 overs.
Michael Newland led the way for the Cops with 50, while Cylus Gibson (27) and Albert Sinclair (20) lend support. Devendra Ramotar took 2-29 from four overs and Jeremy Henry 2-31, also from a similar amount of overs.
Farouk Hussain then smashed 5 fours and 4 sixes in a belligerent 75, but only Ramotar (18) of the other batsmen offered prolonged resistance, as Sinclair took 5-16 from 3.4 overs, including a hat-trick. Young Warriors, who began the final over at 140-7, needing 15 to win, fell for 141. Jerry Heyliger claimed 2-31.
At Canje – Rose Hall Canje defeated Edinburgh by 48 runs after making 169-6 in 20 overs and bowling out the visitors for 121 in 19.2 overs.
Videsh Singh (35), Totaram Seenanan (34), Rocky Bispat (29) and Khemraj Sumair (27) batted well. Off-spinner Ralph Chakalall took 4-33 from four overs.
Sheik Khan (38), Raid Ally (20) and Ravi Bridgelall (25) got starts as ex-Guyana Under-15 player Sanjay Khan claimed 3-19 from four overs and former Berbice Under-17 medium pacer Vishal Mohabir 2-9 and Romesh Munna 2-28.
In Zone ‘A’ the race for the two semi-spots is wide open. Police (7 from 5 matches), West Berbice (5 from 3 matches), Bermine (4 from 4 matches), Young Warriors (3 from 3 matches) and Rose Hall Canje (3 from 3 matches) are all in with a chance of reaching the semi-finals. (Sean Devers)
