Thirty-one year old former Guyana and West Indies Under-19 batsman Hemnarine Chattergoon will lead a strong Vikings team as the Elite Division of the Canada Cricket season commences today in Toronto.
Chattergoon, along with fellow Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan and Azeemul Haniff scored centuries against Young Pakistan for the West Indies Under-19 side in Barbados in the second youth Test in 1996, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that his team is looking forward to the new season and is packed with former Guyana players.
“We are all excited for the start of the league. The club has three teams (Elite, First division and Second division) and also two junior teams. The elite team consist of mostly players who played at some level for Guyana,” Chattergoon, who played his solitary First-Class match for Canada in 2007, informed.
Hemnarine is arguable the most naturally talented of the Chattergoon brothers although Sewnarine has gone on to play Test cricket. Ramnarine played at the regional one-day level for the Combined Campuses and Colleges, while Harrinarine captained the Guyana Under-15 team two years ago.
Former Guyana and West Indies youth player Zamal Khan, Ex National Captain Damodar Daesrath, former Guyana First-Class pacer Jeremy Gordon, former Guyana Under-19 left-arm pacer Naresh Roopnarine, ex-Guyana and West Indies B team Keeper Kenneth Wong and former National youth players Abdel Fudadin and Kevin Murray are all members of the Vikings line-up for tomorrow’s match.
The Manager of the side is Guyanese Michael Khan and Chattergoon, who is the only Guyanese to score centuries in the first two innings at regional Under-19 level (vs Barbados and Windwards in Jamaica 1996), said a few overseas players will be brought from Guyana.
“We will bring a couple of overseas players from Guyana. Ramnarine Chattergoon is already here and played in a second division game last week. He took 5-9 and scored 36 not out. We are trying to get Krishna Deosarran and Royston Crandon here very soon,” Chattergoon explained.
The attractive right-hander said Test players Sewnarine Chattergoon and Sarwan Also represent Vikings as guest players when they are in Toronto.
