As the Lethem and Mabaruma hospitals are slowly becoming operational, the Ministry of Health will soon dispatch a surgical team from the Georgetown Public Hospital to the two regions on a monthly basis to conduct general surgeries.
This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who at his last press conference noted that the team would go and conduct clinics at the hospitals and identify the various surgical cases.
While general surgeries will be done at the hospitals, patients who require specialized surgeries will be brought to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Recently, it was noted that the all civil works and equipment installation have been completed at the Lethem hospital, which will be the leading health institution in Region Nine as it will be outfitted with modern equipment and will be offering a range of services.
It will boast operating theaters, in-patient and outpatient facilities, pharmacy and laboratory.
Currently, hundreds of nurses are in training at the three nursing schools located in Georgetown, Linden and New Amsterdam. Among the lot are students from Region Nine who are slated to return to Lethem to serve at the new institution.
The new hospital will be initially run by the staff from the old hospital and the Ministry of Health will periodically send in “roaming visiting teams” to complement its work.
One of the tenets of the administration is to have equity of services and improved quality of health care delivered to all of Guyana.
As it relates to the Mabaruma Hospital in Region One, it was noted that all equipment has already been installed and the facility is expected to have its grand opening some time next month.
Civil works have been completed and further testing is being conducted on the equipment to ensure that they are operational.
The facility costs in excess of $100M.
Over the years, a total of 28 hospitals have been constructed and rehabilitated in almost all the communities and villages in Guyana.
These include the construction of Leonora, Suddie and Mahaicony Diagnostic and Treatment centres and the Diamond East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, which have brought a different line in health care delivery for Guyanese.
