Dear Editor,
First of all, I wish to convey my regrets to Reshma Pluchan on the loss of her vehicle.
This is indeed an unfortunate event that is quite frustrating; however, I would also like to clarify the issue of security at the Aracari Resort as it relates to parking.
Hotel guests and those registered with the Resort are allowed to park within the compound.
All other customers can park on the main roadway. There is parking for up to 80 vehicles.
Systems Control, a security company, screens customers for contraband; weapons, food and liquor before they are allowed to enter the Resort. They also provide security for the theatre, dance floor and bar area.
Aracari Resort maintains two additional security guards on site. One would assist Systems Control staff with the checking of bags, etc, while one would provide periodic patrol of the parked vehicles on the main roadway.
Please bear in mind that it is usual for customers to go back to their vehicles to access supplies; so there is legitimate activity among the parked vehicles.
No irregularity was observed by the Resort guards. No vehicle alarm had sounded that night.
In other words, there was nothing to indicate that an unauthorised vehicle removal was taking place.
Despite the greatest of diligence by the guards, there was nothing they could have done.
A lot must be said about how to approach people to get them to help. Sugar will always catch more flies than pepper; however, I also understand that a person who just discovered their vehicle missing will not be of the most pleasant temperament.
Reports indicate that her approach contributed to the type of response she obtained from her interaction with the security guards and the DJ. This is quite unfortunate.
We discussed this occurrence at length, but could not come up with a practical solution to the problem.
Unless the security guard observes an irregularity or an alarm goes off, they will have no way of knowing that a vehicle is being removed by an unauthorised person.
We are open to suggestions; in the meantime, the Resort’s security measures will continue as currently organised.
