As Guyana prepares to host the 2008 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), from August 23-27, a team of officials from Suriname and French Guiana arrived in Guyana to evaluate the conditions as well as examine the problems experienced during the second leg of last year’s tournament.
This move is to minimize any blunders that may compromise the smooth running of the games and the team has given the thumbs up for the local efforts.
The foreign delegates were presented to the media at a simple ceremony held at the Main Street office of the Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar, yesterday morning.
They are Suriname’s Deputy Director of Sports Michael Watson, Deputy Director of International Relationship/Charge de Mission of French Guiana, Travise Tracy, Charge de Mission, Chairperson of the IGG Sports Committee French Guiana, Luc Talmon, Laroderie, Charge de Mission/Chairperson of the IGG Sports Committee, French Guiana and John Sadriman, Director of Youth, Suriname.
The first leg of the 2008 Games was held in Suriname but the second leg which comprised of volleyball, cycling and basketball, initially scheduled for French Guiana, had to be postponed and eventually cancelled because of strike action in that country. The organizing committee had attempted to have the games rescheduled for this year but according to Watson, such a decision did not find favour with all of the participating territories since matters of protocol precluded the organizers from going ahead with those plans.
Watson said that in order not to duplicate last year’s errors, the current team of officials from Suriname and French Guiana are here to ensure that all systems are in place.
The team arrived last week and so far has met with the local organizing committee three times.
Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar disclosed that they held fruitful discussions with the visiting team who were impressed with arrangements put in place by the local organizers.
He also said that the foreign team also took the opportunity to visit the Ocean View International Hotel in Lilliendaal, where the visiting teams will be housed. The visiting delegation also visited the various competition venues.
These included the National Stadium, Police Sports Club, Eve Leary, Castellani and Colgrain swimming Pools.
According to Kumar the inspecting team was impressed with the general quality of the venues.
