Cheryl Thompson was returned as President of the Continental Cycling Club (CCC) when that entity held their Annual General Meeting on Sunday last at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands.
The other members of the executive are Neil Fraser (1st Vice President), Raymond Perez (2nd Vice President), Desmond Van Cooten (3rd Vice President), Gemma Williams (Secretary), George Gravesande (Treasurer), Debbie Perez (Assistant Secretary/Treasurer) and Cheryl Matthews-Jones (Organising Secretary).
The Committee Members are Wayne De Abreu, Kevin Jones and Kalamadeen Baksh. Leading senior cyclist Warren Mc Kay was elected Club Captain while his junior counterpart Geron Williams will serve as his deputy. De Abreu was also appointed as the Club Coach.
During 2008, CCC members continued to participate with a high degree of success in events at the National Park and on the Road organised by sister clubs and the National Sports Commission.
Their members also participated in the West Indies versus the World Championships in Trinidad and Tobago last April through Mc Kay and Enzo Matthews.
Some other highlights for 2008;
· Geron Williams and Enzo Matthews were selected as part of a five-member Guyana team for the Inter-Guiana Games which was scheduled for French Guiana. The tour was eventually called off due to disturbances in that country at the time.
· Geron Williams finished as the first junior in the NSC three-stage race in May after placing 2nd in the third-stage. Mc Kay and Williams finished 7th and 8th overall. Mc Kay was 10th overall in the five-stage in November/December.
· John Charles participated in the Senior Caribbean Championship in St. Vincent.
· Matthews won the Gold Cup race for Juniors in Trinidad.
· Charles won the National Championship for seniors with and Williams second for juniors.
· Mc Kay and Williams also competed in a number of races in Trinidad:
June – Tour de Café – McKay (4th)
August – September – Tour of Trinidad – McKay (2nd), Williams (5th)
September – Tobago Cycling Classic – McKay (1st), Williams (5th)
October 10 – 12 – Tour of San Fernando – McKay (5th)
Williams was nominated by the Guyana Cycling Federation and selected by the Guyana Olympic Association and attended the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as an Olympic Youth Camper from August 3-18.
Special mention was made of BMX riders Raymond Perez Jr. and Dineshwar Ragubeer who has consistently placed 1st and 2nd in the 6 – 9 age group, Jason Pollydore (12-14) and veteran Aubrey Gravesande.
Performing duties as Returning Officer was Mr. Reuben Charles.
