Noel Mansfield, 32, of 191 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
It is alleged that on November 4, last, the defendant unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Bhojnarayan Rampersaud.
The defendant, who is married with five children, pleaded not guilty to the charge of the offence.
According to Rampersaud, on the day in question, he was walking in the Stabroek area, when Mansfield and some other men approached him. He added he tried to stay clear of them, since it looked as if they were going to rob him of some money that he had at the time.
‘This man then attacked me. I received a fractured rib when he used a piece of wood and shoved it at my side.’
Representing Mansfield in Court was Attorney James Bond, who said that his client sells haberdasheries in the Stabroek Market. He said that Rampersaud never saw his client before and just mistook him for someone else. He added that his client would never usually be at the Market that hour of the night. He asked for a reasonable bail for the defendant.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews said that Rampersaud must know who assaulted him at that area.
The defendant was placed on $85,000; his next court appearance is set for March 3.
