Leading cycling club, Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) with branches in the City and Linden, will be hosting back to back events on February 7 and 8 to pedal off their programme of activities for 2009.
On February 7 at the National Park, the club will be celebrating the memory of a former Guyana cycling icon, the Late George ‘Boy Blue’ Cumberbatch who was also a Vice President of RBC and Executive member of the Guyana Cycling Federation. Races on the day will be for category 1, 2, 3, 4, juniors, juveniles and 12-14 riders.
The feature clash will be the 30-lap open race which is expected to attract all the leading cyclists in Guyana. Twelve prime prizes will be at stake in this race.
And based on the level of rivalry seen at last Saturday’s season opening feature 35-lap race at the same venue, fans are in for a great treat.
Attractive cash prizes will be up for grabs in all the races. This event is being sponsored by Patron of RBC George Humphrey of Humphrey’s Bakery & Farm Products along with Former Club President, Clifford ‘Tito’ Johnson who rode with Cumberbatch during his glory days.
Riders will not have much time to recover since the next day, Sunday; they will switch focus to the road for the Tony Chung Auto Repairs of New York and Humphrey’s Bakery & Farm Products sponsored feature.
This race, the first road event for the year, will pedal off at the Ruimveldt Arch proceed along the East Bank Public Road to the Linden Soesdyke / Timehri Junction before returning to the starting line for the finish.
All the leading guns are expected to face the starter’s orders, the likes of Alonzo Greaves already with a win for the year’s first event, Geron Williams, Junior Niles, Kennard Lovell, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Lear Nunes, Robin Persaud and Christopher Holder among others.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the first ten (10) riders to cross the finish line, six primes will also be at stake.
