Dear Editor,
As a resident of the Diamond/Golden Grove, New Scheme, East Bank, Demerara, there is something of great concern that needs to be addressed urgently by the relevant authorities.
Ever since I have been residing in this area over the past year and a half, this community has been receiving an efficient garbage disposal service which is being rendered by the NDC within the area, and which also in my opinion is of extreme satisfaction to all the residents .
However, a few months ago, a concrete structure bin bearing a logo with the inscription “TCL” was erected in the vicinity of the Main Road and Third Street, popularly referred to as First Bridge. What is very disgusting is the fact that some residents and business operatives not only use this facility to dispose their garbage but they are blatantly abusing it in the most unacceptable manner. They would not take the time to make sure that their waste gets into the bin properly and as such they throw their garbage even on the shoulder of the road. The sight that one beholds upon approaching that area leaves much to be desired as to what is going on as compared to what used to be a very clean and tidy environment. Additionally, animals would rampage through and scatter the garbage all over the place, ably assisted by the wind.
What I would like to suggest is that since we are preaching about having an environmentally friendly country, which is clean and tidy and free of litter and debris, people who use this facility, should use their discretion when doing so. They should treat that area as though it’s their own. That bin was erected there by some thoughtful individual/s for persons using the roadway who have empty bottles, boxes, wrappers etc to dispose of properly. I would be very grateful if you could bring this letter to the attention of those in authority, so that a Community meeting could be held or other measures could be put in place to address this dreadful situation.
