The proprietor of Joseph CD shop at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling is now counting his losses, after turning up for work yesterday only to find that his shop had been broken into.
The businessman, Jairam Sankar, told this newspaper that on Old Year’s Night he secured his store at some time around 19:00 hours, and when he turned up for work yesterday, he opened as normal.
The man said that when he got into the building, some of the shelves in the store were broken and there was a large hole in the roof of the building.
However, it is not clear when the store was broken into, but there is speculation that it may have been some time over the holidays.
Sankar said that he is convinced that the work was done by more than one person, since to break the roof of the building would have been very difficult.
“Only recently the entire roof of the building was refurbished with solid cast, with only one area done with hallow block,” Sankar explained.
He said that for persons to break the solid cast, it would have taken a while and more than one person.
He said that, upon checking the items in his store, he realised that some $1.5 M worth of items had been taken. He said the burglars made of with DVD car players, CD car players, watches, MP 4 players, a large quantity of cellular phones, digital cameras, and a quantity of laptop bags.
The businessman said that, within recent months, this is the fifth time the premises had been broken into.
According to the businessman, the matter has since been reported, and the police have been very cooperative as they conduct their investigations. He said that when police ranks visited the scene, they removed a crow bar and at least two torch lights, which may have been left behind by the burglars.
