DEAR EDITOR,
I have been residing at Mahaicony since childhood, and have witnessed several floods and attempts to stop or alleviate flooding. However, the works that I witnessed over the past two years seem to be effective with the current heavy rainfall we are receiving; despite attempts by some to paint a different picture.
I can safely say that there is more foresight in the works being undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies, such as the NDIA and MMA. This is what is needed to prevent major flooding — planning.
With the anticipation of the end-of-year rains, the NDIA has strategically coordinated the spraying of the Mahaicony and Mahaica Creeks, which are vulnerable areas before the rains. This has so far proven to be very effective.
The Government has done a lot to improve agriculture, as is evident with the support of the Grow More Food Campaign. It is now for farmers to take the mantle and lead the way forward for agriculture, rather than continually depending on the Government. We farmers now need to ensure that the works undertaken are maintained, to ensure efficient drainage of our farms, thereby securing our livelihoods.
I would like to challenge my fellow farmers to ensure canals and drains that fall within their cultivation be cleaned and maintained, which will minimize flooding in the long term.
