Renowned Trinidadian sports writer /cricket commentator Fazeer Mohamed’s recent article named ‘Crabs in a barrel’ which appeared in the Trinidad Express newspaper sometime last week must have struck a cord with some of those sports officials whose acts of cowardice is one of the reasons why sports in Guyana is struggling to develop.
Mohamed, who I had the privilege of meeting briefly during the last Cricket World Cup, has always impressed me as someone with a brilliant mind and fearless of offering his views about negative developments even if it happens to adversely affect those in authority.
In his article, Mohamed spoke of individuals who remain silent about the current state of affairs in Trinidad and Tobago’s football all because of their personal ambitions rather than let the administrators of the sport know that they are bringing grief and misery to a national passion.
Though Mohamed’s reprimand to those that display such actions was contained to the sport of football, here in Guyana it can be attributed to many disciplines that have persons with such characteristics.
Because of their selfish ambitions or what he so rightly referred to as wanting-to-have-their-cake-and-eat-it-too, many administrators have been able survive long years in office despite little or no evidence of forward movement in their respective sport.
This is because; those that have the power in their hands to effect change are either afraid to challenge those in authority even when evidence of lack of progress is so overwhelming.
We have so many glaring examples of inept management here, but still those guilty of such transgressions continue to reign with little or no opposition because of the protracted silence by those who can make a difference.
As Mohamed stated, real change cannot occur without consequences and if persons are not prepared to suffer the cost then sports will continue to experience more gloomy days.
It is time all who are negatively affecting the advancement of sport be challenged so that this country can experience meaningful progress that can see us once again compete with distinction at the regional and international levels.
For too long, the Government has spoken about sports being used as one of the vehicles for economic growth and that they are prepared to pour huge sums of money into this arena, but after listening to florid speeches at various ceremonies, significant and consistent investment in sports, still remains elusive.
The Government which should be leading the way in the development of sport continues to lag behind, while just a few associations have been able to show growth despite some seemingly insurmountable challenges.
The management of these few entities should be commended for their unwavering commitment and self-sacrificing actions that has benefited their sport.
Entities such as the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club, the Guyana Rugby Football Union, the Guyana Chess Federation, just to name a few, have all witnessed progress because of aggressive and committed administrations who want the best for their respective organisations.
Remaining silent about Government’s skimpy support for sports will in due course affect all of us.
