Dear Editor,
I see an interesting development between the PUC and Mr. Karan Singh of GWI. My first thought is whether the PUC has lied about GWI overcharging consumers. I am perplexed by Singh’s statement to the press that the PUC is only concerned with meagre increases but not concerned about stealing and water wastage by consumers.
Is he saying it is okay to increase water charges by meagre amounts? And what is a “meagre” amount? I anxiously await the next chapter.
I, however, have a few questions and concerns. Mr. Singh says he does not produce water for use of car washing, watering plants, block making, etc. If I have a meter attached to my premises and use water for such purposes, would I not have to pay what the meter has recorded?
He also speaks about treated water being used for all types of purposes. Does he supply untreated water?
And if he does, do those who receive untreated water pay less than those whom he chose to supply treated water? What about those who do not get water for weeks on end? Do they still have to pay water rates, or the full rates fixed for water which is supposed to be supplied 24 hours per day?
I am aware of the financial position in the country, but why is Mr. Singh blaming the GPL for not supplying electricity to his stations all the time? GWI has an obligation to supply water.
It must have the means to do so, and if he cannot, then he should not blame someone else for his defaults and neglect. Mr. Singh is a very vocal person. can he give us some responses to the above queries? Hamidan Khan
