Berbice beat Demerara despite Dowlin’s unbeaten 78
By Sean Devers
Urged on by a small crowd in sunny conditions at the Blairmont ground, hosts Berbice yesterday beat defending champions Demerara by six wickets in the opening match of the Pepsi/Carib Inter County 20/20 cricket competition despite an unbeaten 78 from Skipper Travis Dowlin.
Dowlin’s half-century saw Demerara to 131-5 off 20 overs before Berbice reached 137-4 in 19.2 over to win with four balls to spare.
On a good track and fast outfield Dowlin led from the front with the bat but got little support from his team mates as Berbice avenged their loss to Demerara in last year’s final, at the National Stadium.
The skipper thumped six fours and two sixes from 36 balls in his scintillating undefeated 78 after Demerara, asked to bat first by the host, had lost opener Chris Barnwell (4); bowled by Berbice Captain Esuan Crandon at 14-1.
Barnwell’s opening partner Rajendra Chandrika (24) was then stumped off leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo at 63-2, while former Berbice left-hander Gajanand Singh could only manage 15 on his Demerara debut after being bowled by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul at 116-3 to the delight of the home fans.
Permaul, who finished with 3-13 from his four overs, then bowled Krishna Deosarran for a duck in the same over as Demerara lost two wickets for no run.
National player Deon Ferrier (6) was then removed by Permaul at 129-5 and although Dowlin, a member of the Stanford Superstars squad which beat England in Antigua to win US$1Million, remained to the end, Demerara were never allowed to score as freely.
When Berbice began their reply, they lost Royston Crandon (15) at 30-1, as Steven Jacobs struck with his off-spin, before Richard Ramdeen (36) departed at 78-2.
Narsingh Deonarine, who hit the US$1 million last-ball six against Trinidad and Tobago to give Guyana the inaugural Stanford regional 20/20 title two years ago, was removed by off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed at 104-3.
Ranga Lachigadu (13) fell to Chris Barnwell with victory 24 runs away, but Assad Fudadin (15*), who thumped Ferrier for a six to end the match and national Under-19 player Jonathan Foo (13*) ensured Berbice emerged victorious.
Demerara must now beat Essequibo today when the teams meet at the same venue from 13:00hrs, if they hope to advance to Friday night’s final at the Stadium under lights. Essequibo will play the first of their back-to-back games today against Berbice from 09:00hrs.
