-Currency (102) voted man-of-the-Match
By Rawle Welch
Despite a defiant unbeaten knock of 102 by Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) opener Romel Currency, host Guyana came away with a hard fought 4-wicket win in the opening round of the 2008 West Indies Regional One-Day Tournament yesterday, at the National Stadium, Providence.
Currency, who remained until the end featured in a fourth wicket partnership of 135 with Kurt Wilkinson (76) as CCC reached a formidable 250-6 when the allotted 50 overs expired after being reduced to 57-3 in 10 overs.
Guyana needing 251 to win were made to fight all the way and eventually reached their target, closing on 253-6 in 48.3 overs with Assad Fudadin (60*) and wicketkeeper Derwin Christian (26*), being the batsmen at the crease.
The Guyanese were off to a disastrous start after opener Rajendra Chandrika offered a feint edge to wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton off pacer Callitos Lopez’s bowling for 4 with the total on 10.
Former West Indies middle order batsman Narsingh Deonarine joined forces with Christopher Barnwell and they set about repairing the early damage.
Barnwell, who has been in terrific form all season batted responsibly, hitting the occasional bad ball to the boundary, but for the better part curtailed his usual aggressive instincts and together they took the score to 48-1 off 7 overs at the lunch interval with the former on 16 and Deonarine, a stroke-filled 25 laced with 5 exquisite boundaries.
After the break, the pair continued to bat without any alarms and took the score to 122, before Barnwell, who had reached his maiden half century at this level off 62 balls with 4 fours and a solitary maximum attempted a slog sweep off the off spinner Kavesh Kantansingh, but only succeeded in finding Ramnarine Chattergoon stationed at short mid-wicket. He went for 51 and the stand with Deonarine realised 112 runs.
Fudadin came next to partner Deonarine, who displayed excellent form, driving and pulling with authority, before he was controversially given out leg before to Chattergoon by umpire Vincent Bullen for 67 which contained 10 glorious fours off 76 balls.
Man-of-the-Match Romel Currency receives his trophy from Guyana Cricket Board Executive Ramsey Alli yesterday.
Guyana were then 135-3 in 26 overs and Captain Travis Dowlin arrived at the wicket to partner Fudadin, but after making 14 runs, he inexplicably tried to swing a delivery from off-spinner Romel Currency from off to leg missed the ball completely and had his stumps shattered with the total on 166.
Royston Crandon joined the fray and added another 19 runs with Fudadin, before nibbling a delivery from Wilkinson to Walton behind the wicket. He made 12.
Deon Ferrier was the new batsman and so much depended on him and Fudadin to take Guyana home, but with the score on 204, he too edged a catch to Walton this time off Chattergoon’s bowling for just 8 runs as the host seemed to wobble a bit.
Needing a further 49 runs to win off 9 overs in came the enigmatic Christian, more known for his lusty hitting, but who at times exhibit poor judgment.
He, however, despite a few attempts to hit out over the top, batted sensibly with Fudadin and they took Guyana home with the latter bringing up his 50 in the process following a neat flick off his toes to long-on. It came off 83 balls and contained 2 fours.
He ended the match in grand style pulling Emanuel down to the backward square leg boundary.
Earlier, CCC got off to a solid start with Currency and Chattergoon posting an opening stand of 54, before Chattergoon was bowled by Permaul’s fifth delivery of his first over after the pace bowlers Trevon Garraway and Barnwell were taken to pieces through some indifferent bowling.
Chattergoon, brother of West Indies opener Sewnarine, was severe on both bowlers as he cut and pulled with contempt and by the time of his dismissal he had racked up 6 scorching fours and a towering six off Garraway that landed over the ropes on the mid-wicket boundary.
Jackson replaced Chattergoon, but found the spin hard to negotiate and fell to the off –spin of Crandon without scoring with the total on 55.
Two more runs were added, before the experienced Floyd Reifer edged a ball into the waiting gloves of Christian to give left-arm spinner Permaul his second scalp.
In came Wilkinson and together with Currency, they commenced the recovery act through some cheeky running between the wicket and well placed shots that bisected the fieldsmen.
The partnership blossomed with the 100 coming in 23.3 overs followed by the 150 in 36.2 overs as Guyana seemed to run out of ideas.
Deonarine bowling his off-spin eventually broke the partnership when he had Wilkinson well caught by Chandrika at long-off trying to increase the tempo. His knock included 6 fours and a six off 111 balls.
Walton came and made 17, before he had his stumps bamboozled by Mahendra Nagamootoo’s leg-spin and Lopez tracked him back after suffering a similar dismissal without scoring.
Kirk Edwards was left not out 1 along with the indomitable Currency, who got to his hundred by hitting a mighty six off the final ball of the innings.
