Aiming for compact midfield performance against Antigua – Shabazz
By Franklin Wilson in Trinidad
The ‘Golden Jaguars’ are in a must win situation come this evening when they take on Antigua and Barbuda in their second match of the Digicel Caribbean Championships (DCC) Group H phase two at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
The Jaguars have a single point after drawing their opening match on Wednesday evening against St. Kitts & Nevis while Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors thumped the Antiguans, 3-2.
Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation Jamaal Shabazz disclosed that against the aggressive Antiguans this evening, he is expecting a tough challenge but is confident his charges can pull it off.
“We would be aiming for a much more compact performance from our midfielders and we are looking to add Shawn Bishop to the starting line up for this encounter.”
Shabazz also reflected briefly on Wednesday’s performance noting that he was happy with the overall display by Guyana as they held possession of the ball for long periods.
“It was a difficult game for us, St. Kitts packed their defence and we struggled to get behind them. I was not happy with the fact that we were unable to create enough scoring opportunities but we will work on that.”
The last time the two countries met in a friendly, Antigua were triumphant against a second string Guyana team at home but this evening’s match up will be a totally different ball game.
In the last DCC (20067) second round which Guyana hosted at the GCC ground, Guyana hammered the Antiguans 6-0, Gregory Richardson and Randolph Jerome each scoring a double with Nigel Codrington who is unavailable and Kayode McKinnon tucking in one apiece. Richardson scored the Jaguars’ come from behind goal on Wednesday evening which earned his team one point and will certainly fancy his chances of repeating his feat from the last DCC this evening, so too Jerome and McKinnon.
Barring a few lapses by Walter Moore on the left side of the defence, the back four, Captain Charles Pollard, Howard Lowe and John Rodrigues have stood firm. With Bishop touted to start in midfield, the toss up for the other three spots will be between Carey Harris, Kayode McKinnon, Collie Hercules and Howard Newton. Harris might very well be the one making way for Bishop.
Richardson is expected to start up front again but it is not quite certain who his strike partner would be. Jerome or Devon Millington might be in the line up to start.
Richard Reynolds is expected to start between the uprights again. Noting less than a win will be good for their chances of advancing to the finals slated for Jamaica next month.
Shabazz as usual, is calling on the Guyanese public to send out positive vibes and their prayers for the team this evening.
Trinidad and Tobago match skills with St, Kitts & Nevis in the opening game at 17:00hrs and will be aiming for win number two which will seal their spot in the finals.
