– others expected to decrease this week
By Rustom Seegopaul
Due to the reductions in the price of oil on the world market and the subsequent lowering of the price of gasoline in Guyana, the minibus operators that ply the Georgetown/Linden Route have decided to lower their minibus fare from $900 to $800. This change is expected to take effect from tomorrow.
The reduction comes approximately six months after the minibus fare to Linden was raised from $700 to $900.
Speaking with some of the Linden minibus operators, Kaieteur News was told that they (drivers) were hopeful that in the near future, the prices of essential spare parts would also drop so that they would be able to reduce their prices even more.
They said that they were doubtful that the price of gasoline would rise again, but noted that if this did happen, they would adjust their prices as necessary.
Linden minibuses are apparently not represented by the General Mini Bus Association (GMBA), and the decision to lower the fare was unanimously reached by the operators at a meeting they had yesterday.
These minibuses are the first to lower their fares following the significant reduction in the price of gasoline at the Guyana Oil Company. However speaking with the Advisor to the President of the General Mini Bus Association (GMBA), Hilbert Archer, Kaieteur News was able to ascertain that reductions, from the other routes, are expected to come into effect some time this week.
The fare reduction is expected to be countrywide, and should affect all of the various minibus routes.
The GMBA noted that some of the minibuses which operate around Georgetown have already begun to revert to the old short drop fare of $60.
No resistance is expected, said Archer, from minibus operators who want to hold on to the raised fare structure. For longer distances, it is expected that the fare will drop by approximately $100.
The fare structure is expected to be released to the public early this week.
Archer noted that he was confident that the price of gasoline would stay fixed, if not drop lower.
However, it was noted that if the price of gasoline once again climbed to and over $1000, then the fares would once again be adjusted. Archer said that the GMBA had already made this clear to the Minister of Commerce, Manniram Prashad.
